What is the Arctic Seed Vault?
The Svalbard Global Seed Vault is located in the Arctic Circle, on an island called Spitsbergen. It was built to store a copy of the world's seeds, in case of a global disaster.
The survival seed vault is a concrete bunker, built into a mountain. It has three chambers, each with its own door. The vault can store up to four million seeds. The seeds are stored in sealed packets, on metal racks. The vault is kept at -18 degrees Celsius (0 degrees Fahrenheit). The Doomsday Vault is not open to the public. It is only open to scientists and researchers. The seeds are not for sale. They are only for research purposes and just recently reached over 500,000 unique samples to become the most diverse collection of crops in the world.
The new arrivals included a mold-resistant bean from Colombia and soybeans from the United States.
It's doors opened in 2008 and has been used six times, to store seeds from different parts of the world. The most recent shipment was from Syria, in 2018. The Syrian seed bank was damaged by a bomb the seeds were quickly evacuated to the Doomsday Vault. The Syrian seed bank was the first Middle Eastern seed bank to be stored in the vault.
